Using Meli – Hive Inspection Tool

Meli is a hive inspection tool in the Nectar app that lets you quickly assess colony health using a short audio recording. With a 15-second clip, Meli analyzes your hive and provides results for: Frames of Bees (FoB), Queen Status, & Varroa Threshold

Updated over a week ago

Important to Note

  • Meli is in beta: results may vary, and accuracy will improve over time.

  • Beta access is available at no cost until January 31, 2026.

  • Confirming or challenging results is key to training the model.

Step 1 – Start a Meli Inspection

  1. Open the Nectar mobile app.

  2. Select the yellow + button.

  3. Select 'Hive Inspection' and scan the hive.

  4. Select “Record the hive.”

Step 2 – Record a Hive Audio Clip

  1. Hold your phone's microphone near the hive entrance.

  2. Tap the Mic button.

  3. Record for 15 seconds.

Step 3 – Review Signal Strength

After recording, Meli will tell you the signal confidence. A medium or low confidence level means that the Audio recording was not good enough for Meli to give the best prediction possible. If it has medium or low confidence, you can select the 'record the hive' button at the bottom to record the hive again.

Step 4 - Review Results

After recording, Meli automatically analyzes the audio and shows:

  • Frames of Bees (FoB) – estimate of colony population

  • Queen Status – queenright or queenless

  • Varroa Threshold – mite level per 100 bees

Step 4 – Confirm or Challenge Results

  1. Compare the results with your own inspection.

  2. Tap Next if the analysis looks accurate.

  3. If the results are not accurate, enter your own inspection results as you usually would with the practices and sliders in the hive inspection form. This will override Meli's results in the report.

  4. Verify the data you entered is being submitted on the summary page.

ℹ️ Your feedback trains the model and improves accuracy.

Step 5 – Stay Updated

  • New model versions download automatically when you are online.

  • No manual action is required to update.

You’re ready to start using Meli. Try it during your next hive inspection to record audio and view instant health results.
